Sir Theagaraya College was started in 1950. The college started with the Intermediate Course. It became first Grade College in 1954. Affiliation to B.A History came in the year 1956 under the leadership of Prof.Dhanushkoti Chetty. It was upgraded to a post Graduate department in the academic year, 1981-1982 under the leadership of Prof.Leela Radhakrishnan. It is poised to become a research centre affiliated to the University of Madras in the year 2010 under the leadership of Prof.Dr.D.Subramanya Raju. The department has the honour of producing eminent personalities in various domains including law and justice, administration and politics.

There are seven faculty members including two part time lecturers Headed by Dr.S.N.Nageswara Rao. The faculty members have been diligently involved in academic work. Besides they have been actively participating in the professional Conferences and Seminars They have obtained Minor Research Projects from UGC and a faculty member has obtained Major Research Project from UGC and the same has been completed. As a research department, faculty members namely Dr.G.Ravichandra Babu along with H.O.D. are involved in guiding research both at the M.Phil and Ph.D levels on individual basis. Series of publication at the National and International levels came forth from the faculty. Students of the Department have imbibed the research culture from the faculty who have been a source of inspiration and support.
