The Department of Physics was established in the year 1978. At the time of inception of college Physics was offered along with Chemistry and Mathematics; with Numerical methods, Integrated electronics and micro processor fundamentals as elective subjects. The overall student’s strength is 225. The Department boasts of a full fledged, spacious, well ventilated laboratory with all modern facilities. Valuation has to be made of the department’s collaboration with the Indian Physics Association and Physics Teachers and many such organizations.
The Department is proud of its students who have, on several occasions won prizes in inter collegiate competitions.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes
4. Trends in the success and dropout rates of students during the past two years Due to the keen interest and efforts of faculty members and cooperation of the students, there is increase in the pass percentage and decrease in the drop out of students during the past two years.
5. Learning resources of the department – library, computers, laboratories and other resources
The department has educational resources to facilitate effective learning of the students. There are more than 700 books in the department library. There is a well-equipped laboratory in the department. Each student is given an opportunity to perform the experiment individually and independently, which results in effective learning.
6. Modern teaching methods practice and use of ICT in teaching – learning The faculty members use their own innovative methods to facilitate effective learning. The LCD projector, Over Head projector, Slide projector and film projector are used during the classroom teaching. Students are taken to field visit to scientifically important places such as Sriharikota to facilitate the effective learning. Basic principles are demonstrated with the help of teaching aids, models and equipment available in the laboratory.
7. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students. Teachers not only impart knowledge to the students effectively but also provide counseling to those students who badly need of the same. Teachers also provide career guidance and assist the students in all possible ways to prepare themselves employable graduates.
8. Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who have been benefited during the past two years Faculty members equip themselves by attending orientation and refresher courses periodically. Dr. S. Abraham Rajasekar attended an orientation course from 01.11.2008 to 28.11.2007 conducted by the Academic Staff College, University of Madras.
9. Participation/contribution of teachers to the academic activities, including teaching, consultancy and research Teachers are actively participating in the academic and research activities for the benefit of the students.
10. Collaboration with other departments / institutions, at the State, National and International levels, and their outcome during the past two years Department is closely associated with the research institutes such as IIT, Anna University, Madras University, Loyola College, etc. and does the research effectively with the assistance of these institutes.
11. Priority areas for Research and details of the ongoing projects, important and noteworthy publications of the faculty during past two years
Faculty members are actively involved in the research activities too and their field of research is solid-state physics. Dr. B. Munirathnam was awarded Ph.D., degree by the University of Madras on 28.04.2010 and he attended two conferences. Dr. K. Thamizharasan and Dr. S. Abraham Rajasekar are guiding the students for their Ph.D degree. Dr. Thenneti Raghavalu published a research article in the reputed journal.
12. Placement records of the past students and the contribution of the department to aid student placements With the guidance of the faculty members a few passed out students got placement in the reputed organizations.
13. Plan of action of the department of the next five years The department has planned to execute innovative methods to impart quality skill based education and will do the needful to produce efficient, employable and committed graduates. The department will assist the weak students in all possible ways.
