The Department of Chemistry, Sir Theagaraya College, Chennai – 21, was established in the year 1971, with the sole vision of imparting value and quality education with special emphasis on ethical values of human life. It offers CHEMISTRY main to over 150 students for whom Physics and Maths/Zoology form the Allied subjects during their I and II years of studies respectively. The Department of Chemistry also offers Ancillary subjects in Chemistry to around 200 students of disciplines such as Zoology, Botany, Physics and Mathematics. In addition, it takes pride in offering M.Sc Chemistry to its Evening College students. It is a well knitted and the most sought after department with adequate facilities. It has, at present 3 (in place of 8) dynamic, dedicated, young and vibrant faculty members, who strive hard to imparting good & quality education to the students, besides engaging themselves in active research. The Departmental library has to about 1500 books at the disposal of the students. Here, in the Department of Chemistry, in addition to regular classroom teaching of the subjects, in order to enhance the awareness levels, overall competencies and socio economic status of the students & make them responsible citizens, field visits and sensitization of students to global concerns are being done through value education

1.Faculty Profile - adequacy and competency of faculty
The MISSION is to practice Social concern and uplift the standards of living of these students by educating the socially neglected, poverty sticken, deprived and disadvantaged lot of this part of Chennai and help them capable of facing the challenges outside and become employable, while the VISION is to strive hard in imparting value and quality education with special emphasis on ethical values of human life.
Department of Chemistry, the well knitted and the most sought after Department in the College by the +2 qualified students for admissions, residing in and around Chennai and elsewhere in the state, established in the year 1950, has come a long way to reach this level of achievements. With around five teaching positions left vacant, there are 3 dynamic, enthusiastic, dedicated, workaholic, young, vibrant, Results & Research oriented faculty members sail the ship of Chemistry Department in a well organized, balanced, smooth and successful way with the chief Captain in Dr. R. Ilango. The faculty members of the Department consider imparting good and quality education to the students, as their prime objective and are striving hard towards it. Over and above, the staff of the department is also engaged in active research in terms of UGC projects and guiding research scholars under the “Part time – external” provisions. They evince a good quantum of interest in publishing research articles, attending seminars, symposia, etc., in addition to meeting the academic requirements of the department which is marching towards achieving excellence. To enlist a few, Dr. A. Rajendran, Assistant Professor and Dr. P. Pazhanisamy, Assistant Professor are successful in getting a UGC funded Major Research Project each, to the tune of Rs. 15 Lakhs. They have published quality research articles in reputed, peer reviewed National and International Journals. They have also dedicated themselves in the voluntary services involving students through the NSS units of this college.

2.Student Profile - Student profile – entry level competencies, socioeconomic status, language proficiency etc.,
In order to enhance the overall competencies, socio economic status, language proficiencies, etc. of this lot of students who lack it and make them complete, committed and responsible citizens of this great nation, in addition to regular class room teaching involving curriculum, they are also imparted with knowledge on soft skills, value education, etc. They are also sensitized with the environmental issues that the globe in facing, then and there.

3.Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes
An enormous amount of changes has been effected in the curriculum by the university based on the recommendations of the UGC, in order to match the job market prevailing and make the students employable in all respects. In the light of these changes, the faculty members strive hard, equip themselves time and again, so as to provideto the student community with what they want. Such changes in the courses, gives the students an opportunity to have hands – on training to understand the concepts better. It also provides them with opportunities for field work, industrial visits, etc, involving teachers, in addition to routine class room teaching of the subject
4.Trends in the success and dropout rates of students during the past two years
Keeping in mind the idea of “Education for all” the department of Chemistry ensures minimum drop outs and maximum successrecent statistics in terms of students got enrolled and the drop outs indicate a much improvement in enrolment and very minimal drop outs when compared with a few years back. In order to keep the scenario intact, repeated practical classes are conducted along with periodic tests and seminars. In addition, remedial classes are also conducted in both theory and practicals in order to encourage and ensure the below average & average students and slow learners.
5.Learning resources of the departments - library, computers, laboratories and other resources
In terms of Educational resources, for the two way process of effective teaching and learning, the department has adequate laboratory facilities such as workspace [student/lab space ratio,] glasswares, chemicals, equipments and a well equipped departmental library, in addition to the central library of the college. The departmental library has to about 1300 books at the UG level with both lending and reference options to students. It also has an advanced computer at its disposal for use by both teachers and students
6.Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in teaching learning
In addition to the regular & routine but still effective Chalk and Talk method of teaching, the department strongly believes in the exploration and exploitation of modern tools for the effective communication and better teaching. It owns and uses a very advanced LCD projector with both pen drive and laptop options for classroom teaching, in addition to using an overhead projector sparsely. With LCD, use of animation enabled power point presentation for diagrams, tables, flow charts, numerical problems, derivations, complex and complicated concepts, etc. helps the students to understand anything and everything with ease and help them in a big way to become thorough knowledge wise. It has molecular models, that will enable the students to understand the 3-D spacial arrangement of atoms in molecules. It also has models for crystal structures and charts depicting periodic classification of elements, shapes of orbitals, hybridization, first aid procedures, etc. With these, it is hoped strongly that these students have an edge over others in terms of competences from the learning perspective. Over and above, getting suggestions, constructive ideas, if any, as feedback from students, always form a part and parcel of teaching by the faculty of this department. Field visits and sensitization of students to various global concerns such as terrorism, human rights, environmental degradation, global warming, green house effect, ozone layer depletion, etc through value education by the staff of this department, help the students largely to become aware of such menace and involve themselves in curbing them to the extent possible and thus help the students, lead a sustainable life.
7.Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students
Students, when they seem to be sluggish, getting destracted and irregular to the classes, they are identified by the respective class teacher in-charge. Then, with proper personal counselling, they are directed appropriately to be back to the main stream. They are also encouraged to take up competitive exams, quiz programs, etc. in order to meet the requirements of today’s competitive world, in addition to imparting curricular knowledge involving repeated practical classes, periodic tests, remedial classes, seminars etc 8.Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who have been benefited during the past two years In order to fine tune oneself and to be in pace with the current scenario in the field of Chemistry, the faculty members equip themselves by attending the various UGC sponsored orientation and refresher courses as and when there is a possibility. Dr. A. Rajendran and Dr. P. Pazhanisamy had attended the UGC sponsored orientation courses during the year 2008 – 09. Dr. A. Rajendran, Assistant Professor had also attended a UGC sponsored refresher Course in Chemistry, entitled “Recent Trends in Chemistry”, at the University of Madras from 15.09.2010 to 05.10.2010.

Staff members of this department besides hectic academic activities and research, are also engaged in consultancy in the form of rendering technical and conceptual aids whenever sought by the Aluminus of this department who are in industries and other general public.

The Department of Chemistry, in its march towards achieving excellence, has close association with premier and frontier institutes like the IIT, University of Madras, Central Leather Research Institute, CSIR Unit, Taramani etc. in order to gain intellectually by both student and teacher community.
11.Priority areas for Research and details of the ongoing projects, important and noteworthy publications of the faculty, during past two years
The priority areas of Research of this department include “Green Chemistry”, “Polymer Chemistry” and “Nano Science”. Dr. A. Rajendaran, Assistant Professor has an UGC assisted Major Research Project in progress & Dr. P. Pazhnisamy has another Major Research Project funded by the UGC. They have published 5 and 4 research articles respectively in reputed, peer reviewed international journals, to their credit.
12.Placement record of the past students and the contribution of the department to aid student placements
None of the students who complete their degrees in chemistry remain jobless until today. With proper directions, guidance, advice and motivation from the members of faculty, meritorious students, in spite of stiff competition and tough selection procedures, are placed in leading IT firms and Industries as R & D chemists & Analytical Chemists in Q & C. In the case of some students, keeping their potentials towards higher studies in mind, they are helped to get admitted in PG courses in Chemistry in the premier institutions and colleges, in and around Chennai. Placements of the students are effected and in turn, the students’ families’ monetary requirements are facilitated primarily by the department itself, based on the requests made by various firms to the department. Campus interviews, whenever possible are also arranged for this purpose. It is also done often by the placement cell of the college.
13.Plan of action of the department for the next five years
In the days to come, all out efforts will be made, involving one’s all strength and resources and no stone will be left unturned to see that the department of Chemistry performs still better in all the quarters day-by-day, achieves excellence, registers records and glitters in glory.
