The Department of Botany was established in the year 1979, under the leadership of Prof. Arunachalam, with Mr. Balakirshnan as demonstrator. He and other great teachers promoted love of plants and a spirit of inquiry that are still the highlights of this Department. Those who studied here are now shaping the teaching of botany in schools, colleges, and universities.
The Department runs a need based regular B.Sc. degree course. The department is equipped with Student and Research microscopes, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, Rotary shakers, Laminar flow chambers, herbarium, and botanical garden for teaching and research.
The Botany Department along with Zoology Department is housed in a separate building with adequate space for teaching and research. Besides teaching the faculty is actively involved in research. The current research interests of the faculty include: taxonomy, anatomy, ethnobotany, biodiversity, and microbiology.
We are prepared to offer the best training in plant sciences that is relevant to the needs of the day and which appeals to the intellectual and vocational aspirations of the students of the present and coming generations.
The Department now has four faculty members with Doctoral degree.. The students have attended National level Seminar in Stella Maris college, Chennai (4th and 5th February 2012) and also presented the importance of medicinal plants in Exhibition organized by Government of Tamil Nadu.
