INTRODUCTION :
The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1954 by Sri P. Ramaswamy Chetty and his Collegues of the Managing Committee. For nearly more than 50 years, the department flourised well and reached to greater heights in the web of eduction. The Department of Mathmatic had engaged in teaching and developing mathematical skills. Special efforts had been taken by the faculty to improve the knowledge of the students. The Mathematics association of the Department also conducted various events to develop the students skills. All this was possible only by the support of the Management, Principal and fellow Faculty members.

The competency level of most of the students at the entry level is relatively as most of them hail from socially and economically disadvantaged sections of North Chennai. One of the welcome features in recent years is the growing number of girl students leading to, in near future gender parity in student demography.

Keeping in views the socio-economic background of large number of students,serious and sincere efforts are being taken to hasten their learning process. Such efforts have not only borne fruit in building core competencies in the subjects but also in enhancing their language and communication skills.

5. LEARNING RESOURCES OF THE DEPARTMENTS - LIBRARY, COMPUTERS,LABORATORIES AND OTHER RESOURCES
The Department is endowed with an array of educational resources which facilitate the learning process among students. The department has a separated library with more that Two Hundred and Fifty books for the benefit of both the faculty and the students.
6. MODERN TEACHING METHODS PRACTICED AND USE OF ICT IN TEACHING- LEARNING
The faculty members of the department have significantly altered the teaching methods. No longer are they focusing exclusively on Chalk and Talk method. Instead they have effectively embraced the information and communication technologies for the delivery of educational content. Power point presentations are made for the benefit of the students.

7. PARTICIPATION OF TEACHERS IN ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL COUNSELING OF STUDENTS
Going beyond the academics, the faculty members pay particular attention to the personal needs of the students who come up with a range of issues. Counselling proved to be the efficacious method in addressing such issues.
8. DETAILS OF FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AND TEACHERS WHO HAVE BEEN BENEFITED DURING THE PAST TWO YEARS
Faculty members attended various faculty development programme such as orientation course and refresher course for the benefit of themselves and for the students. They also updated their knowledge by attending various programmes conducted by 8 other colleges and Universities.
9. PARTICIPATION / CONTRIBUTION OF TEACHERS TO THE ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES INCLUDING TEACHING, CONSULTANCY AND RESEARCH
The faculty members are extremely talented and competent: their levels of participation in the seminars, national and international and the presentations that they make in the seminars resulting in publication in journals.

The Department had not make any collaboration with other departments/ institutions,at the State, National and International levels.

There is no ongoing projects in the Departments at this stage. Our faculty members are interested in doing the minor projects in the forthcoming years.

13. PLAN OF ACTION OF THE DEPARTMENT FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS
The department has road map to improve the academic performance through emulation of best practices pursued in other colleges so as to enhance the skills and competencies. Plans are also a foot to develop newer platforms and newer tools to impart education to the students.
The department has encouraged the students to participate in many seminars and workshops conducted by various colleges. In the forthcoming years, we have decided to conduct more competition both in intra and inter collegiate level in order to increase the knowledge of the students.
The department also wish to extend a Postgraduate degree such as M.Sc., Mathematics in our college so as our students may continue their studies further. Our faculty members also wish to attend various faculty development programme for the benefit of the students in future.
At the time of Parents teachers meet, we have decided to counsel both the students and the parents highlighting the significance of higher education for the future of the students so that there will not be any dropout rate.
Faculty members will be sensitize the students about the emergence of new avenues of opportunities for employment in various sectors and guide them to access those opportunities.
In this way, the faculty members of the department would work hard more to develop the students knowledge. More importantly, the department is concerned both with the task of transforming students into productive persons useful to the nation.
