INTRODUCTION
The Department of English was established in the year1954 and has grown with the college. The department had the privilege of having some eminent faculty members including the late M.K Shanmugam who headed the department and later became the principal of the college. His vision of academic growth and excellence of students’ community are still carried out by the existing four dedicated faculty members successfully. All the faculty members are talented and render their service wholeheartedly for the improvement of students’ studies. Simultaneously, some of the faculty members attend National and International seminars/conferences. Dr K.Thiyagarajan, Lecturer (SG) &Head, presented papers in the National and International Conferences. Meanwhile, he published an article in the Journal ‘Language in India’. Mr. M. Anandharaj, lecturer (SG) published a book. He has also done some translation works. While Mrs.V.Kavitha, Asst. Prof. organised some student oriented programmes, Mrs.K.Jayanthi, Asst.Prof. presented some papers in the National/International Conferences.
ACTIVITIES/ ACHIEVEMENTS
The prime motto of the department is ‘Students Upliftment’. In order to realize it, the faculty members of the department have charted out the following THREE OBJECTIVES and have been working accordingly.
1. To increase students’ pass out percentage in Part II English Paper.
2. To improve their communication skills
3. To expose them to the outer world.
The majority of students in this college are from rural areas where they miss to know the real value and importance of English language and communication in it. As a result, most of the students struggle to cope up with their English papers. Having this in mind, the department encourages their confidence in studies by way of supplying suitable study materials, work Books and relevant things. In spite of all these efforts, some students fail in their English Papers for various reasons. Even for such failed students the department conducts remedial courses periodically.
Today, everyone knows very well that ‘No Communication skills, No Employment’. In order to improve their communication skills, the department has setup an updated Communication Lab through which the nuances of communication skills are being taught to students.

2. Students’ Profile
The Department does not have students of its own as the department does not offer English as an optional or Main Branch under Branch XII. But all the First Year UG students of other Major departments and Second Year B.A & B.Sc. students must take up Foundation Course English (Part II English) as it is mandatory for the above students. In that way, the department has roughly 600 students. Among the students some of them seem to be dull as they hail from socially and economically weaker sections of North Chennai. But this college is considered to be a great boon for girl students who are not able to go away for their higher studies.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes.
This college is affiliated to University of Madras. Unlike the past, the University is very often changing the Part-II English syllabus in order to mould the students to job market requirements. In this connection, a few years ago two additional papers on SOFT SKILLS were introduced to both first year UG and PG students. Again in 2008-09 the University made some modifications in the part II English syllabus. But whenever there is a change of syllabus, the faculty members change the teaching methodology and also prepare suitable study materials well in advance in order to facilitate students for easy learning. Again students are advised to make use of language lab where they are taught to acquire communication skills
4. Trends in the success and drop out rates of students during the past two years.
A few dropouts of students can be seen in any higher institution due to their socio and economic backgrounds. But still, some suitable efforts are being taken by the faculty members now and then to avoid such dropouts. To this effect, sometimes such less interested students and their parents are counseled by the faculty members who usually explain them the value and importance of higher education and how it is going to shape their future life. After this, some students vow themselves to stick to their education at any cost.
5. Learning resources of the department-library, computers, laboratories and other resources.
The department often instructs students to make use of available resources for the improvement of their studies. There is a separate ‘department library’ which has a number of books that are barrowed by needy students. Sometimes students are advised to get books from the general library which has several books on language, literature and communication skills. To teach soft skills and communication skills the language lab becomes a great help.
6. Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in teaching learning.
The faculty members have gradually reduced the chalk and talk method as they have increased the usage of laptops and ICT technologies to deliver lectures. Students learning levels are being tested with the help of language lab and other methods.
7. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students.
Apart from academic activities, the faculty members pay special attention to students’ personal problems, addressing with suitable solutions. As there are two women faculty members in the department, the girl students are able to meet them without any hesitation to get help and solutions for their problems, if any.
8. Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who have been benefited during the past two years.
Dr.K.Thiyagarajan attented some short- time faculty improvement programmes including the course on IT for Non-IT Teachers, conducted by the ICT Academy, Govt of Tamilnadu. Mr.M.Anandharaj, Mrs.V.Kavitha and Mrs.K.Jayanthi have also attended such courses which motivated them to import quality education to students effectively.
9. Participation/contribution of teachers to the academic activities including teaching, consultancy and research.
The faculty members grab at every opportunity of attending seminars and conferences, including a few paper presentations. Mr. M.Anandharaj and Mrs.K.Jayanthi have submitted their Ph.D Thes and waiting for their public viva-voce examinations. Meanwhile, a few faculty members have sent their research articles which would be published by reputed journals soon.
10. Collaboration with other departments/institutions at the state, National and International levels, and their outcome during the past two years.
The strength of students lies not only in their subject knowledge but also in their knowledge about the world. To fulfil this, the department used to invite guest lecturers to deliver lectures on current topics. And then students are constantly motivated to take part in intra and inter-collegiate competitions regularly. What about the staff serving on other Institutional Boys etc?
We don’t have such collaboration with other departments.
11. Priority areas of research and details of the ongoing projects, important and noteworthy publications of the faculty, during the past two years.
The faculty members are research oriented and the main focus of their areas are English language teaching, literature and communication skills. In this connection, some of the faculty members have sent their articles which are yet to published.
12. Placement record of the past students and the contribution of the department to aid student placements.
This college has a separate Placement Cell which invites corporate companies to conduct Campus recruitments every year. Before a few weeks of such recruitments, our faculty members with the guidance of the placement cell conduct some mock interviews. At present some of our students work in Nokia, Airtel and other companies.
13. Plan of action of the department for the next five years.
The department has planned to improve the quality of students’ academic performance and their competency level in communication. In future, the language lab will be upgraded with additional computers, including latest interactive software packages for developing their communicative skills. Meanwhile, the department will request the management to take initiatives to start some communication oriented courses to cater to the growing demands of such courses in the society.
