Introduction

The Department of commerce was established in 1950-51. B.Com. degree course was introduced in the year 1970. Professor B.Chengalvarayan founder H.O.D. he was the chairman of the B.Com. Board of studies for 25 years in his tenure. The Department is consistently producing good results for the past 10 years. Many of our students are occupying high position both in public and private sectors. Students can practice as consultants in the field of accounts and taxation. Besides they are taking up lower and middle level cadres in government and private sectors. They are also pursuing C.A. and ICWA Courses simultaneously with ease. Many students have scored centum marks in many subjects.

The success of the department comes not only from the development of faculty members, but also from the success of the students. Majority of the students enrolled here are from backward communities and poor economic conditions. The present intake is 140 students (two sections) and we receive more than 600 applications every year. The students are selected by strictly following the government norms through marks scored in twelfth standard and oral interview. Keeping in view with the socio- economic back ground of our students sincere and serious efforts are being taken to improve the learning process. Such efforts have not only produced excellent academic results but also increased their core competencies for the overall development. As a result of additional efforts of faculty members, the department is consistently producing good results over the years and our students have increasingly securing centum marks in many subjects. Drop-out rates among the students are reduced to zero level.

Our students are also pursuing C.A., ICWA, CS, MBA and MCA courses with ease. Going beyond the academic, the faculty members pay special attention to the overall needs of the students who come up with a range of issues. In order to make students more potential and employable, we organize a number of field visits. We motivate students to prepare for and appear in competitive examinations. We encourage the students to attend inter collegiate competitions, seminars and symposiums. Many of our successful students are occupying high positions in both public and private sectors.

Faculty Profile – adequacy and competency of faculty:

The Department is at present functioning with six full time faculties. The faculty members have rich academic qualification and par talented evident from the end semesters results; their level of participation in academic activities like seminars and conferences and presentation of papers in them made the faculties relatively competent and also enhance their knowledge. The Department is endowed with three Ph.D Faculties and one faculty is pursuing Ph.D Degree. The Faculty members have published an array of articles in various reputed National and International journals. Dr. M. Karunakar, Head of the Department has published 7 research articles in the various National and International journals. The faculty members are encourages to publish research articles. The active participation of the faculty members in academic advancements has been helpful to maintain prestige of the Department. One faculty member Mrs. T. Jayasheela, has registered Ph.D Degree under the Guidance of Dr. M. Karunakar.

2. Student Profile - Student profile – entry level competencies, socioeconomic status, language proficiency etc.,

The success of the Department is not only vested on the faculty members but also students of the Department. The majority of the students enrolled here are from backward communities with poor economic conditions. It gives pride to us to say that the Department has an average receives more than 800 applications in every year. The students’ intake is 140. The students are admitted by following Government norms. Our students have actively participated in various quiz and seminars organized by different colleges. Most of the students have been participated un Extension services like NCC, NSS, YRC and sports activities. It is happy to say that most of our students were selected and placed in Multinational companies located at various geographical parts of India. Our students are participated Right to information Act seminar conducted by the
Don Bosco Anbu Illam Social Service Society.

At present there are 335 students strength in the department. Of which 102 are girl students and 233 are boys. Most of the students admitted are hailing from socially and economically weaker sections of the society in the North Chennai. Moreover, it is heartening to note that girl students constitute nearly one third of the total strength.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes

Since the institution is affiliated to the University of Madras, the department is following the curriculum and syllabus framed by the University of Madras. For the past three years Choice Based Credit System with internal assessment along with semester pattern is followed. The senior faculties of the department are insisting for the introduction of job oriented subjects in the course at the Board of Studies meeting.

4. Trends in the Success and dropout rate of students during the past two years

The sincere and continuous efforts of the faculty are not only produced good academic results but also increased their core competencies for their overall development. As a result of additional efforts, the department is consistently producing good results over the years and our students are increasingly securing centum marks in many subjects. 5. Learning resources of the departments- library, computers, laboratories and other resources

The department has exclusive library with the titles of 264 books to cater to the needs of the students. In addition, the department is subscribing reputed journals for the benefit of faculty and students. We have established a lab in the department to enlighten the students’ practical aspects of commerce, banking, insurance and stock exchange. Moreover the department has a computer with printer and students are browsed with computer skills by engaging the specialists and experts in the field of Information Technology.

6. Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in teaching-learning

To suit the educational culture of the students the faculty of the department has altered the teaching methods. Special care is being taken to enhance the students learning caliber by modifying class room teaching methods to the weaker students. To increase their interest in the class, instead of using chalk and talk, Power Point and OHP are used for teaching the latest subject trends.

7.Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students:

Going beyond the academic, the faculty members pay much attention to the overall needs of the students who come up with a range of issues. Personalized Counseling proved to be best method of addressing such issues. In order to make students more potential and employable, Department organizes a number of field visits. We motivate students to prepare for appearing in competitive examinations. We encourage the students to attend inter collegiate competitions, seminars and symposiums.

8. Details of Faculty Development Programmes and teachers who have been benefitedduring the past two years

The faculties of the department are increasingly attending Faculty Development Programmes in recent times. Mrs. K.Vasuki participated in two workshops and Mrs.K.Shoba attended one such a programme.

9. Participation / contribution of teachers to the academic activities including teaching,consultancy and research

All the faculty members are actively participating in academic and research activities. They are taking classes for MBA and other management programmes in University of Madras and other Universities.Dr. M. Karunakar got recognition to guide PhD scholars. He is guiding 8 PhD scholars and publishing many articles in journals. All other faculty members are guiding M.Phil candidates in other Universities and publishing articles in reputed journals

10. Collaboration with other departments/ institutions at the state ,national and international levels and their outcome during the past two years

The department has opened informal Channels of collaboration with the other departments in the college and other colleges in the Chennai city. Such collaboration extended beyond disciplinary confines. We are inviting the other department faculty members and faculty members of various colleges to give their special lectures to the commerce student. Faculty members of the department also giving special lectures to the Economics and Computer Science students of our college and other Institutions.

11. Priority area of research and details of the ongoing projects, important and noteworthy publication of the faculty during past two years

The Head of the Department and the faculty members are concentrating on research front. The main areas of research include Human Resource Management, Marketing and Finance. They publish a number of articles in these areas in leading national and International journals namely

Advances in management, HRM Review, Marketing Mastermind and Research Journal of Social science.

Many of our old students were appointed as teaching faculties in various colleges in TamilNadu. Some of our old students have become Chartered Accountants, Insurance, Police, Advocates, Software Trainers and consultants.

13.Plan of Action of the department for the next five years

The department has drawn road map to improve the academic performance of the student s. The present lab in the department is to be improved with the latest technology in the information and communication areas.

A special care is being taken to improve the English language skills to the students and also special coaching is to be given to the needy students to get through the university examination in the English subject by engaging some retired teachers of our college.

Efforts are being taken to make the department of commerce as a research centre in the college by publishing articles and strengthening library. The HOD will encourage the faculty members to apply for UGC major and minor projects.

Sincere attempts are in progress not only to improve the students’ academic performance but also transforming them in to socially responsible citizens
