Profile of the Department of Tamil

The Department of Tamil was established in the year1954 and has grown with the college. The department had the privilege of having some eminent faculty members including the late M.Rajamanickam who headed the department and later became the principal in-charge of the college 1975. His vision of academic growth and excellence of students’ community are still carried out by the existing four dedicated faculty members successfully. All the faculty members are talented and render their service wholeheartedly for the improvement of students’ studies. Simultaneously, some of the faculty members attend National seminars/conferences. DrR. Chockalingam Associate Professor, & Head, presented papers in the National Conferences. Mr. S. Mahadevan Associate Professor published 5 Nos. of books. He has also done some works in the field of Non-Formal education. Dr. P. Jeya Assistant Professor attended Four National Conferences. Dr. B. Dhananjayan Assistant Professor presented some papers in the National Conferences.

ACTIVITIES/ ACHIEVEMENTS

The prime motto of the department is ‘Students Upliftment’. In order to realize it, the faculty members of the department have charted out the following THREE OBJECTIVES and have been working accordingly.

The Department of Tamil has been active throughout the year by conducting various competitions round the year. The most important feature that adds colour to the department, is ‘Tamil Manavar Mandram’. It is an yet another Flower to the cap of the department. This Association has been regularly conducting competitions like oratorical, Essay Writing, Singing, Poetry Recitation, Mono-acting Competitions successfully. This provides platform for the students to exhibit theor talents and creativity.

The department also hones The skills in students and equips them to participate in inter-collegiate competitions. The students come out with flying colours bring levels to department.

The Non-Tamil students have been properly tutored by conducting regular classes as per the Madras University Syllabus. The department takes pride in producing 100% result consecutively for three years.

2. Students’ Profile

The Department does not have students of its own as the department does not offer Tamil as an optional or Main Branch under Branch XII. But all the First Year UG students of other Major departments and Second Year B.A & B.Sc. students must take up Foundation Course Tamil (Part II Tamil) as it is mandatory for the above students. In that way, the department has roughly 700 students.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmer during the past two years and the contribution of the faculty to those changes.

Since our institution is affiliated to university of Madras, we are following the curriculam and syllabi framed by the University of Madras, the syllabus and the Pattern of question papers have been changed on time during the last two years from semester pattern without internal Assessment. Keeping in view that the socioeconomic back round of large number of students serious and sincere efforts are being taken to hasten their learning process. Such efforts have not only borne fruit in building core competencies in the subjects but also in enhancing their language and communication skills.

4. Trends in the success and drop out rates of students during the past two years.

A few dropouts of students can be seen in any higher institution due to their socio and economic backgrounds. But still, some suitable efforts are being taken by the faculty members now and then to avoid such dropouts. To this effect, sometimes such less interested students and their parents are counseled by the faculty members who usually explain them the value and importance of higher education and how it is going to shape their future life. After this, some students vow themselves to stick to their education at any cost. As we don’t have major Tamil Students we can not give separate table for drop our students.

5. Learning resources of the department-library, computers, laboratories and other resources.

The department often instructs students to make use of available resources for the improvement of their studies. There is a separate ‘department library’ which has a number of books that are barrowed by needy students. Generally students are advised to get books from the general library which has several books on language, literature and language skills.

6.Modern teaching methods practiced and use of ICT in teaching - learning.

The faculty members of the department have significantly altered the teaching methods. No longer are they focusing exclusively on chalk and talk method. Instead they have effectively embraced the information and communication technologies for the delivery of educational content. Power point presentations are made in the LCD Projector, available in the college for the benefits of the students.

7. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students.

Apart from academic activities, the faculty members pay special attention to students’ personal problems, addressing with suitable, solutions. As there is one women faculty member in the department, the girl students are able to meet them without any hesitation to get help and solutions for their problems, if any.

9. Participation / Contribution of teachers to the academic activities including teaching, consultancy and research.

The faculty members are academically active and are research oriented. They are actively participated and presented papers in number of National level and international level conferences.

Dr. R. Chockalingam has been appointed by the Directorate of School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu, as Reviewer for preparing Tamil text book for IX std, which is under revision of New syllabus popularly known as ‘ SAMACHEER KALVI ‘.

Dr. S. Mahadeven has participated a round – table on Life Long Learning and participated a workshop on preparation of Text Book in Tamil for Non – Formal Education.

10. Collaboration with other departments / institutions, at the state, National and International levels and their outcome during the past two years.

The Department has opened informal channels of collaboration with the Departments in other college in the city of Chennai. Such collaboration extended beyond disciplinary confines. Faculty members who belonged to departments such as Language and literature departments were invited to give special lectures. Such plans are in the anvil to regularize and formalize the interaction.

13. Plan of action of the department of the next five years.

The Department has roadmap to improve the academic performance through emulation of best practice in other colleges so as to enhance the skills. Plan are also afoot to develop newer platforms and never tools to impart education to the students. More importantly, the department is concerned with task of transforming students into productive persons useful to the nation.

All the faculty members of the department are having Ph.D degree and capable of doing good quality research work. The department will encourage the members to apply for major and minor projects.
