Evaluation report of the Department of Physics
Introduction:
The Department of Physics was established is the year 1978. At the time of inception of the college, Physics was offered along with Chemistry and Mathematics as the Allied subject.
Professor M.B. Nathan, the first Head of the Department applied for the permanent affiliation for the B.Sc. Branch III (Physics) with Mathematics and Chemistry as allied subjects.
In the year 1985 Professor M.B. Nathan retired and Professor M. Panduranga Rao was promoted as Head of the Department. In his Headship the department got permanent affiliation from the University of Madras.
In the year 1995 Proffessor M. Panduranga Rao became the principal of the College, Professor M. Munuswamy became the Head of the Department.
In 1998 Dr. B. Muni Rathnam became the Head of the Department and running the Department effectively.
Dr. K. Thamizharasan got M.Phil guideship in various Uninversities and successfully produced 25 M.Phil candidates and the Ph.D guideship in Bharathiar University in 2009 and presently guiding 5 students.
Dr. S. Abhraham Rajasekar got the Ph.D guideship in Bharathiar University and guiding one Ph.D candidate.
The Department has spacious class rooms and well ventilated laboratory with all modern facilities.
1. Faculty Profile - adequacy and competency of faculty
There are four faculty members with two vacancies. The faculty members are highly talented and dedicated. The faculty members participated in seminars, workshops, national and international conferences and presented their research papers.

2. Student profile – entry – level competencies, socioeconomic status, language proficiencies etc.,
As most of the students come from socially and economically disadvantaged section of the society, their competency level in the subjects is very low. The proficiency in English is also very poor. In order to bring these students to the regular stream, remedial classes, bridge courses and soft skill training programmes are conducted.

3. Changes made in the courses or programmes during the past two years and contribution of the faculty to those changes
Since our institution is affiliated to the University of Madras, we are following the Curriculum and syllabi framed by the university of Madras. The academic stream has been changed from the semester pattern without internal assessment to choice based credit system with Internal Assessment. Sincere efforts are being taken to facilitate the students for the effectively learning. The department has represented to the Board of studies, University of Madras to change the content of the syllabus, testing and evaluation methods, on the basis of the feedback got from the present and passed out students.
4. Trends in the success and drop out rates of students during the past two years
Due to the keen interest and efforts of faculty members and cooperation of the students, there is increase in the pass percentage and decrease in the drop out of students during the past two years.

5. Learning resources of the department – library, computers, laboratories and other resources
The department has educational resources to facilitate effective learning of the students. There are more than 700 books in the department library. There is a well-equipped laboratory in the department. Each student is given an opportunity to perform the experiment individually and independently, which results in effective learning.
6. Modern teaching methods practice and use of ICT in teaching – learning
The faculty members use their own innovative methods to facilitate effective learning. The LCD projector, Over Head projector, Slide projector and film projector are used during the classroom teaching. Students are taken to field visit to scientifically important places such as Sriharikota to facilitate the effective learning. Basic principles are demonstrated with the help of teaching aids, models and equipment available in the laboratory.
7. Participation of teachers in academic and personal counseling of students
Teachers not only impart knowledge to the students effectively but also provide counseling to those students who badly need of the same. Teachers also provide career guidance and assist the students in all possible ways to prepare themselves employable graduates.
8. Details of faculty development programmes and teachers who have been benefited during the past two years
Faculty members equip themselves by attending orientation and refresher courses periodically. Dr. S. Abraham Rajasekar attended an orientation course from 01.11.2008 to 28.11.2008 and attended the refresher course on Nanosciences from 18.11.2010 to 08.12.2010 conducted by the Academic Staff College, University of Madras.

All the staff members are actively participating in academic and research activities Dr.K.Thamizharasan got guideship in various Universities namely Bharathidasan University,Periyar University,Annamalai University & Bharathiyar University and guiding 5 Ph.D candidates. Dr.S.Abrham Rajasekar got guideship in Bharathiyar University and guiding one Ph.D scholar

Department is closely associated with the research institutes such as IIT, Anna University, Madras University, Loyola College, etc. and does the research effectively with the assistance of these institutes.

On going Projects - Nil
The Head of the Department and faculty members are concentrating on Research. The main thrust areas of research are crystal growth , solid state physics and spectroscopy. Dr.B.Munirathnam H.O.D published 3 research articles in Indian Journal of Science and Technology and Asian Journal of Chemistry.

13. Plan of action of the department of the next five years
Since the department is fully equipped and all the faculty members are Ph.D Holders, the department is planning to start the M.Sc. Physics Course and subsequently research.
Staff Details
Student from BSc Computer Science won 1st prize in Quiz Competition held at Pachayappa College.
Dr.A.Rajendran and his research Assistant Miss.M.Priyadarshini presented research articles in the 2nd National Conference.
